Aloha Friday: Cord Cutting

Back in August, I wrote about cutting the cable cord. At the time, I concluded that it wouldn’t pay to cut cable, but we have since revised our opinions. (Look for those revised opinions as well as reviews on the products/services that caused us to review them in some future posts.) We’re now not just considering going without cable, but without a landline phone as well. For phone service, we would rely on our cell phones.

My Aloha Friday question is: Have you gotten rid of your cable/satellite TV service? Have you gotten rid of your landline? If so, how much money have you saved and do you think it was worth it?

Aloha Friday: Yom Kippur and Fasting

This Monday, Jews around the world will celebrate Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. As part of atoning for our sins, we’ll fast during the entire holiday. For the record, that’s 25 hours without food or water. Not even a sip of water to quench our thirst. (Children, nursing mothers, the elderly, people with medical conditions are excused from the fast. Their health is more important than the fast.) Fasting for that long isn’t as hard as it sounds though. You eat dinner the night before, skip breakfast and lunch, and then eat dinner once the fast is over.

My Aloha Friday question is: What is the longest you have fasted for and for what reason?

Aloha Friday: Ten Years With My Angel

Ten years ago tomorrow, I was just getting back from Rosh Hashana services. I wasn’t tired enough to go to sleep, so I decided to log onto Yahoo Chat and talk with a few people. Little did I know that B was in the same chat room. Actually, B didn’t even know she was in the same chat room. She thought that the window was closed. When she saw it was open, and that I was signed in, she checked my profile. A change I made a few weeks back – adding the text “Nice Jewish Boy looking for Nice Jewish Girl” – led B to contact me. Right from our initial chatting, we clicked. I didn’t know at the time that I would fall in love and marry her, but I definitely knew that there was something special about this “Angel Forever.”

My Aloha Friday question is: Have you ever met anyone in person that you had first met online? Do you feel that meeting people online lets you get to know them better than meeting them in person?

Aloha Friday: Harvest Time – The Devouring

Are you detecting a pattern yet? In my Wordless Wednesday post, I showed some photos of my harvest. In my Tell Me Thursday, I posted the story of my harvest. Well, today we devored our harvest. Ok, not the entire harvest. As I mentioned yesterday, I made Peanut Butter Jalepenos and Peppermint Tea. For the cucumber, we decided to go a simpler route. I sliced it up and had a taste test with a store bought cucumber we had on hand. We were pleasently surprised to find out that the home grown cucumber was sweeter than the store bought one. Alas, split amoung the four of us, the cucumber was gone all too fast. We’ll just have to keep an eye on our cucumber plant to see if any more cukes mature. Have you ever grown anything to eat in your garden? If so, what did you make with it?

Oh, and while you ponder your answer, here are some photos of the cucumber being prepared for devouring.
